La palabra 'thread' estrictamente es 'hilo', pero en sentido figurado es 'hilo de discusión', 'hilo de debate', 'hilo de comentarios', hilo de respuestas', 'hilo de conversación', …
En algunos casos está traducido tal cual, como 'hilo', pero en otros casos está traducido como 'tema', principalmente cuando se refiere al foro.
Creo que sería mas adecuado entonces traducirlo como 'debate', puesto que a su vez 'foro' se sobreentiende como 'foro de debate' o 'foro de discusión' ('debate' es mas corto). Suena un poco mal: "Crear un nuevo tema". De hecho, en la página de admin de Wikidot se usa indistintamente 'forum thread' y 'discussion'. También, la definición de debate según Google es: "formal discussion on a particular topic". La palabra 'tema' es mas adecuada para 'topic' o 'subject' (aunque también se puede usar 'asunto').
Mas que una cuestión de traducción es una cuestión de nomenclatura a usar, independientemente de la que se usa en inglés.
